Cancer Support Services
Counseling
An experienced oncology social worker/counselor assists patients with a
variety of issues and concerns, whether directly or indirectly related
to their illness. In addition to individual and family counseling,
support groups are available so
that patients and their families can share mutual concerns, address
treatment issues and identify helpful coping strategies. Our oncology
case manager assists patients in the hospital with practical needs as
well. All of this is provided in a warm and accepting atmosphere with
the goal of helping you reach optimal health.
Nutrition
The Comprehensive Cancer Program at Jupiter Medical Center is one of the
few cancer programs on the Treasure Coast that has a dedicated
Registered and Licensed Oncology Nutritionist on staff full-time. Each
new patient is assessed for nutritional needs. Nutrition is an
important aspect of the overall cancer treatment plan. Cancer
treatments can greatly affect nutritional needs of the patient.
Nutrition therapy
and counseling are provided for patients dealing with treatments that
may impair their ability to eat, thus affecting their treatment
outcome. Personalized dietary recommendations from the Oncology
Nutritionist are developed to fit each individual’s needs to maintain or
improve their nutritional status. Support and education to the
caregivers is also provided. Programs promoting optimum nutrition for
cancer risk reduction, as well as programs encouraging healthy eating
and healthy lifestyle are also offered to the community. Presentations
during National Nutrition, and throughout the year, include cooking
demonstrations, wellness and exercise, and Mind/Body therapies.

Oncology Data Management
When cancer touches your
life, there are many questions you may want answered. Today,
Oncologists are able to answer more and more questions based on
important cancer research. A vital part of that research involves
analyses of the data compiled by the Jupiter Medical Center Oncology
Data Management Department.
Oncology Data
Management is a data system designed for the collection, management and
analysis of information on people with a diagnosis of cancer and certain
non-cancerous tumors. The Oncology Data Management Department is an
essential component to the Ella Milbank Foshay Comprehensive Cancer
program.
Much of the
information you hear about cancer treatments and results has its
beginning in hospital-based Oncology Data Management Departments (also
known as Tumor Registries or Cancer Registries). As a fully accredited
cancer program with the American College of Surgeons-Commission on
Cancer, Jupiter Medical Center is mandated to conduct lifetime follow-up
on all our cancer patients.
Oncology Data Management Department
Staff
Specially trained
tumor registrars are responsible for the recording and statistical
analysis of the diagnosis and treatment data on all registered
patients. The registrars are responsible for conducting lifetime
patient follow-up.
The Importance of
Patient Follow-up
Follow-up is the
process used to obtain updated information about our patient’s health
status after their treatment has been completed. It is important that
patients continue to have regular check-ups with their physician(s)
every year. A tumor registrar contacts the patient’s attending
physician on a regular basis. If the patient has not seen his/her physician(s) within the preceding year, then it might be necessary to
contact patient by mail. It is only through this lifetime follow-up
that we are able to determine our patients’ progress.
If patients change
attending physicians or their name, address or phone number, they are
encouraged to contact the Oncology Data Management Department at (561)
748-4129 or by mail to:

Utilization of the
Collected Data
It is required
that data collected by Oncology Data Management be forwarded to numerous
agencies concerned with cancer research. The American Cancer Society and
the American College of Surgeons receive annual reports. Data is also
released to the Florida Cancer Data System and to physicians for special
studies. It is possible that a physician may give permission for a
patient to be contacted to participate in special studies. Rest assured
no names are released to the public. All records are kept
confidential.
We Care…
We care about your progress. We care
about your future and the future of your children. Through the
collection of this information and our annual follow-up, we can best
learn how to fight this disease.
