The Leapfrog survey uses 39 assessment criteria including whether a hospital has specially trained doctors for critical care, achieves Leapfrog’s standards for high-risk surgeries and meets the highest standards for overall excellence including a review of data from Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). It also selects hospitals that have comprehensive systems in place to protect patients from harm. Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grades are considered the “gold standard of patient safety.”
