JMC Performs First Robotic Coronary Artery Bypass Procedure in Palm Beach County and the Treasure Coast

Jupiter, FL – November 1, 2024 – Jupiter Medical Center proudly announces it is the first hospital in the Palm Beaches and Treasure Coast to complete a robotic-assisted MIDCAB (Minimally Invasive Direct Coronary Artery Bypass) procedure for the treatment of Coronary Artery Disease. This innovative surgery was performed by the team at Jupiter Medical Center led by Vivek Patel, MD, FACS, Cardiac Surgeon. This procedure represents a significant advancement in the treatment of coronary artery disease, and places Jupiter Medical Center in the company of only a handful of programs in the state to offer this treatment.
The RA-MIDCAB procedure is designed to treat blockages in the coronary arteries and is conducted via a 3-inch incision on the anterior chest, avoiding the need to stop the heart, open the breastbone or spread the chest. It represents a revolutionary step forward in cardiac surgery, potentially offering patients a less invasive surgical option with better outcomes.
Traditional Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG) has long been the standard for treating coronary artery disease in patients with particular patterns of coronary blockage. The traditional method involves making an incision in the breastbone and separating the ribs, often requiring the temporary cessation of the heart function. While it is a highly effective surgical intervention with long-term success rates, one of its primary drawbacks has been the lengthy recovery period associated with it. The RA-MIDCAB procedure has the potential to offer the same long-term durability as traditional CABG procedures but with expedited recovery and less pain.
"This is a pivotal moment not just for Jupiter Medical Center but for the field of cardiac surgery. RA-MIDCAB offers a safer, more efficient alternative to traditional methods, and we're thrilled to bring this robotic technology to our community,” said Dr. Patel.
“Through this groundbreaking procedure, Jupiter Medical Center continues its commitment to providing world-class healthcare, grounded in innovation and compassionate care,” said Amit Rastogi, MD, MHCM, President and CEO of Jupiter Medical Center. “We are dedicated to advancing medical practices that benefit the community, ensuring every patient receives the best possible outcomes.”
