Managing Central Sleep Apnea

Sophisticated Treatment Options Designed to Improve Your Quality of Life

Unlike obstructive sleep apnea, which is typified by snoring and difficulty breathing due to a blockage in the upper airway, central sleep apnea (CSA) is a vastly different disease. CSA is a neurological condition that occurs when the brain does not send the correct signals to your diaphragm. When the diaphragm doesn’t move properly, the lungs do not have a consistent rhythm—making breathing irregular. Typically, CSA occurs more frequently in people who have other diseases, such as chronic heart failure or atrial fibrillation.

If you have recently been diagnosed with CSA, or are experiencing symptoms associated with CSA—such as shortness of breath at night, breathing that temporarily stops while asleep, or difficulty concentrating—you are not alone, and Jupiter Medical Center is offering a revolutionary treatment option.

The remedē® System is an FDA-approved, central sleep apnea treatment that improves sleep to enable better overall health. It is an implantable system that safely and effectively treats moderate to severe CSA in adult patients. Turning on automatically at night, the system can detect when breathing has become disrupted during sleep and will signal the phrenic nerve inside the chest to stimulate breathing in the same way the brain would.

The remedē® System can be implanted on either side of the chest, so even if you have a pacemaker or other cardiac device, you might still qualify. Additionally, this cutting-edge treatment is being covered by an increasing number of insurance plans. However, every plan is different, so we recommend consulting with your insurance company. If you are curious about whether the remedē® System is right for you, contact our sleep medicine specialist today!
